AGROCHEMICAL DISCOVERY UPDATE – GREENLIGHT BIOSCIENCES’ NEW BIOPESTICIDE VADESCANA || GRANTED ISO STATUS

A new common name provisionally approved for an RNAi acaricide designed to manage Varroa destructor, from GreenLight Biosciences. It is a large molecule containing 372 base pairs, so the structure is presented as the sequence of the purine and pyrimidine bases RNA (Varroa destructor calmodulin gene-specific double-stranded interfering EP15).

Vadescana is a very large molecule made up of hundreds of nucleotide base pairs that is not expected to be biologically available via the oral, dermal or inhalation routes of exposure. Studies submitted for EPA pesticide registration demonstrate the products containing vadescana, EP15 Technical and the two EP15 Formulations, have low to no acute toxicity in mammals, low to no toxicity to pollinators under the conditions of use including the target host, honeybees, and other non-target organisms, low probability of exposure to the environment, and high specificity to Varroa mites.

This substance is a double-stranded ribonucleic acid (dsRNA). It is a large molecule containing 372 base pairs, so the structure is presented as the sequence of the purine and pyrimidine bases adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and uracil (U).

There are sequences at the ends known as ITS (internal transcript sequence) which are needed to manufacture the dsRNA but have no pesticidal activity.

Vadescana active ingredient, is in development to target the Varroa mite of bees, enabling a first-in-class RNA product for bee health. Active RNA molecules for fungal pathogens are the next targets in the plant health development pipeline. Vadescana can keep mite levels below threshold levels for more than 12 weeks.
