Synopsis :
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched 35 different crop varieties with special attributes developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) today in order to address the Two major challenges such as climate change and malnutrition.
- A video conference was held at all ICAR institutes, state, and central agricultural universities, and Krishi Vigyan Kendra to dedicate the new crop varieties to the nation.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), 35 crop varieties with unique attributes such as climate resilience and higher nutrient content will be available in 2021.
Drought tolerant chickpea (gram or Bengal gram), wilt and sterility mosaic resistant pigeonpea, early maturing soybean, disease-resistant rice varieties, and biofortified wheat, pearl millet, maize and chickpea, quinoa, buckwheat, winged bean, and faba bean are among them.
These distinguishing attributes of Crop varieties that address anti-nutritional factors found in some crops that are harmful to human and animal health are also included.
Speaking on the occasion today, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar stated that 86% of farmers in the country are small farmers, and the Prime Minister’s priority has been to increase their income.
The Prime Minister believes that farmers should not rely on the kindness of others to survive, but should instead rely on their own strength. Central government’s several schemes, such as PM- KISAN and transport facilities via Kisan rails, have been launched to empower farmer, he added.
From seed to market, facilities are being provided to ensure that their income doubles and that India becomes self-sufficient in the farm sector, he added.
Bhupesh Baghel, the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister for the inauguration of the National Institute of Biotic Stress Tolerance’s newly constructed campus in Raipur.
‘Climate change is a major source of concern around the world. Its impact is being felt in our community. There are two reasons for this: one is natural, and the other is a reduction in soil carbon’ he stated, emphasizing the importance of conducting a comprehensive study to determine the impact of climate change on the country.
The event was attended by the Union Ministers including Parshottam Rupala, Kailash Choudhary, Shobha Karandlaje, and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh.
