ADAMA has launched Forpido, a new insecticide designed to protect rice crops from pests while also promoting plant growth. The product combines a unique formulation enriched with zinc, offering a dual benefit: effective pest control and enhanced plant health.
Forpido is a granular formulation that targets the rice stemborer, a common pest in rice farming. It contains a combination of Chlorantraniliprole (0.53%) and Fipronil (0.8%), which work together to provide comprehensive control over the pest.
Chlorantraniliprole is an Anthranilamide diamide insecticide. The Anthranilamide diamide insecticides apparently act by binding and modulating the ryanodine receptors thereby keeping the calcium channels partially open, resulting in excessive and uncontrollable release of stored calcium ions with consequent disruption of normal function and lead to muscular contractions, paralysis and eventually death.
Fipronil is a GABA receptor inhibitor, blocks GABA-gated chloride channels in the central nervous system, as do several Phenyl pyrazole Insecticides. Disruption of the GABA receptors by fipronil prevents the uptake of chloride ions resulting in excess neuronal stimulation and death of the target insect.
How It Works
- Forpido has a two-way action due to a combination of Chlorantraniliprole and Fipronil
- Chlorantraniliprole uptake is primarily through ingestion, and secondarily by contact, with exposed insects exhibiting general lethargy and muscle paralysis. The insects rapidly stop feeding and ultimately die.
Additional Benefits for Plant Growth
In addition to its insecticidal properties, Forpido is enriched with zinc, an essential micronutrient for plant health. Zinc supports root development and contributes to the production of more tillers, which may improve the overall growth and yield potential of rice crops.
Application and Formulation
Forpido is available as a granular formulation (GR), designed to be applied directly to the field. The granules ensure even distribution, providing consistent pest control and growth promotion throughout the crop’s growth stages.
Patent Protection
First Patent Protection by FMC:
- The combination of Chlorantraniliprole and Fipronil was covered in the FMC’s international patent application number WO1553, filed by E. I. Du Pont De Nemours and Company, which is set to expire in 2026.
- This patent filed globally including India, which was also opposed at Indian Patent Office (IPO), however Patent has Granted.
Selection Patent by Adama:
- Adama filed international patent application WO7264, to protect the combination (mixture) of Chlorantraniliprole, Fipronil, with Zinc, trade name Forpido formulation.
- The said ADAMA patent application set be expired in 2044.
Note: Many Indian companies applied for regulatory approval in CIBRC, they would not be able to sell the product before the expiration of WO1553.
