Bifemetstrobin, also known as S-2326, is a strobilurin fungicide developed by Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd.

  • APPROVAL: Provisional Approval
  • DEVELOPMENT CODE: S-2326
  • IUPAC: methyl (2Z)-3-methoxy-2-[(4-methylbiphenyl-3-yl)oxy]prop-2-enoate
  • FORMULA: C18H18O4
  • ACTIVITY: Fungicide
  • GLOBAL IMPACT: International Patents Filed

ABOUT BIFEMETSTROBIN: Bifemetstrobin has excellent control effects against plant diseases and is a method for controlling plant diseases. It can be used as an agricultural and horticultural fungicide for fields, paddy fields, orchards, tea fields, pastures, lawns, etc., and by using it in combination with other agricultural and horticultural fungicides, the fungicidal effect can be expected to be enhanced.

It  can control plant diseases caused by plant pathogenic microorganisms such as fungi, Oomycetes, Phytomyxea, and bacteria. Examples of fungi include Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Chytridiomycota, Mucoromycota, and Olpidiomycota. Specific examples include the following. The scientific name of the plant pathogenic microorganism that causes each disease is shown in parentheses.

Examples of plants for which this compound can be used include corn, rice, wheat, canola, tobacco etc.

ABOUT STROBILURINS FUNGICIDE:

Strobilurins are a class of natural products and their synthetic analogs, widely used in agriculture as fungicides. As part of the larger group of Quinone outside Inhibitors (QoIs), they work by inhibiting the respiratory chain at Complex III. The first strobilurins, A and B, were derived from the fungus Strobilurus tenacellus.

Commercial strobilurin fungicides were developed by enhancing their photostability and activity, marking a significant advancement in fungus-based fungicides. Since their introduction in 1996, ten major strobilurin fungicides have emerged, now constituting 23-25% of the global fungicide market. Notable derivatives include azoxystrobin, kresoxim-methyl, picoxystrobin, fluoxastrobin, oryzastrobin, dimoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin, pyraoxystrobin, and trifloxystrobin.

Primarily acting as contact fungicides, strobilurins have a long half-life as they are absorbed into the cuticle without further transport. They suppress other fungi by inhibiting electron transfer in mitochondria, disrupting metabolism, and preventing growth. Widely used across the globe, strobilurins are registered for use in soybeans, rice, cereals, vegetables, fruit trees, and other plants.

IP SCENERIO: Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. initially filed an international patent application on June 22, 2000, for a Bifemetstrobin compound patent to provide effective control against plant diseases. This patent expired on June 22, 2020.

Subsequently, Sumitomo Chemical filed a new patent on January 29, 2021, covering a composition of Bifemetstrobin that provides excellent efficacy in plant disease control, along with a method for applying it. This patent is set to expire on January 29, 2041.

Additionally, Sumitomo Chemical holds patents for methods of using Bifemetstrobin and their inventions which are filed. One such patent was filed on March 10, 2023, with an expiration date of March 10, 2043. Another method patent was filed on November 29, 2023, and will expire on November 29, 2043.
