FMC Corp. says it received U.S. Environmental Protection Agency registration for fluindapyr fungicide, which provides protection against a wide range of destructive diseases in a row and specialty crops.

FMC says this is the first significant regulatory approval for the new fungicide, and it has submitted for registration of fluindapyr formulations in several locations including China, Brazil, Argentina, and the European Union.

“We are excited to provide growers and golf course superintendents with a valuable new fungicide active ingredient to rotate into their disease management program,” says FMC chief marketing officer Diane Allemang.

Earlier last year in May 2020 – FMC Corporation and Isagro S.p.A. have agreed to a binding offer whereby FMC will acquire Isagro’s Fluindapyr active ingredient assets for €55 million (approximately $60 million).

The cash transaction, expected to close by the end of third quarter 2020, will transfer to FMC all intellectual property, know-how, registrations, product formulations and other global assets of the proprietary broad-spectrum fungicide molecule.

Fluindapyr, originally discovered by Isagro, has been jointly developed by FMC and Isagro under a 2012 research and development collaboration agreement.  Each company has been investing in its own fungicide formulations based on Fluindapyr active ingredient, and each is pursuing registrations in select regions and countries.  The transaction will provide FMC with full global rights to Fluindapyr active ingredient, including key U.S., European, Asian and Latin American fungicide markets.

“Fluindapyr is an important SDHi molecule in the FMC portfolio that combats a variety of diseases in row crops, specialty crops and turf,” said Mark Douglas, president and CEO-elect of FMC.  “This acquisition strengthens our fungicide product line.  We expect a pre-launch in Paraguay this year, an initial launch in the U.S. in 2021, followed by launches in China, Europe, Argentina, Brazil and other countries.”

The transaction, subject to customary regulatory approvals from relevant antitrust authorities and the finalization and transfer of commercial agreements, excludes liabilities, Isagro sites and workforce.  Additional financial details have not been disclosed.

Indian CIBRC (Central Insecticide Board and Registration Committee) Update on Fluindapyr:

  • Nov 13, 2018 – Fluindapyr Molecules to be included in the Schedule of the Insecticides Act,1968.
  • May 15, 2019- M/s Isagro (Asia) Agrochemicals Pvt. Ltd., for grant of registration of Fluindapyr Technical 96% min. for indigenous manufacture for export only under section 9(3).
  • May 15, 2019- M/s Cheminova India Ltd., for grant of registration of Fluindapyr Technical 96% w/w min. for indigenous manufacture for export only under section 9(3).

December 23, 2020, EPA is proposing to register fluindapyr, in suspension concentrate form, for the following agricultural uses:

  • Soybeans;
  • Crop group 15 (cereal grains), except rice;
  • Crop group 16 (forage, fodder and straw of cereal grains); and
  • Crop group 14-12 (tree nuts).

Proposed non-agricultural uses are:

  • Golf courses;
  • Turf in lawns and landscape areas around public, institutional and commercial properties;
  • Container- and field-grown ornamentals;
  • Greenhouse ornamentals; and
  • Utility rights-of-way, roadsides, railways and industrial areas.

Fluindapyr protects against a broad spectrum of fungal diseases such as anthracnose, alternaria leaf spot, bermudagrass decline, brown rot blossom blight, leaf rust, pink snow mold, powdery mildew, rot eastern filbert blight, and scab.

Fluindapyr will provide another tool in the management plan against pecan scab. As a non-strobilurin fungicide, it will help manage strobilurin-resistant C. sojina in soybean. Fluindapyr is also likely to play a role in fungicide resistance management on pecan and soybean. On other crops such as almond, turfgrass, and ornamentals, fluindapyr appears to be comparable to available alternative fungicides.

EPA has not identified any dietary, residential, or aggregate risks of concern for human health. Risks of concern for occupational workers will be mitigated by the use of personal protective equipment as specified on the proposed label and by a 14-day restricted entry interval where necessary.

EPA is proposing specific mitigations to address potential ecological risks to bees. These include robust advisory spray drift management language to reduce exposure and restricting the  application timing of fluindapyr on almonds to “post-bloom only.”
