PepsiCo India and N-Drip, makers of an innovative gravity-driven micro-irrigation system, have announced a partnership ahead of World Water Day 2022 to help farmers in India adopt breakthrough water efficiency technologies. The technology has already been rolled out in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan with a goal of improving water efficiency on thousands of hectares across the country by 2025.
This is part of a global partnership between PepsiCo and N-Drip that aims to increase water efficiency on 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres) around the world by 2025. N-Drips’ highly efficient irrigation system is powered by gravity and takes advantage of the water-saving benefits of the High-pressure drip irrigation, but with low energy consumption, operation and maintenance calls to make it more accessible to all types of farmers and almost all types of crops. Farmers using N-Drip routinely achieve significant water savings, see larger crop yields, and reduce the need for expensive fertilizers. Additionally, switching from flood irrigation to the N-Drips drip irrigation system will reduce carbon (CO2) emissions by up to 83 percent and methane emissions by up to 78 percent.
Speaking about this development, Pratap Bose, Agro Director, Supply Chain, PepsiCo India, said, “Being an agri centric company at heart, PepsiCo India over the last 30+ years has been working towards increasing efficiency across its agri supply chain to reduce water usage by providing alternates to flood irrigation practices. The collaboration with N-Drip is another step in that direction. We are excited to partner with them as they are committed to solving the problem of water shortage by providing a robust alternative to flood irrigation. The initial response to the pilot project has been quite encouraging. We are already seeing improved crop yields, reduced fertiliser usage, and an average reduction of 39 per cent water consumption compared to flood irrigation in states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan.”
PepsiCo, Inc. is an American multinational food, snack, and beverage corporation headquartered in Harrison, New York, in the hamlet of Purchase. PepsiCo’s business encompasses all aspects of the food and beverage market. It oversees the manufacturing, distribution, and marketing of its products.
Pepsi has been repeatedly criticized by environmentalists for its relationship to negative environmental impacts of agriculture in its supply chain, and distributing operations such as palm oil-related deforestation and pesticide use, its use of water resources, and the negative impacts of its packaging—Pepsi’s packaging has consistently been one of the top sources of plastic pollution globally. Similarly public health advocates have criticized Pepsi’s high-calorie, poor nutrition product lines along with other popular snack and drink manufacturers. In response, PepsiCo has made public comments on their commitment to minimizing their impact but has not released public information documenting progress on most of its public commitments.
N-Drip is the first and only micro irrigation solution powered by gravity. A disruptive technology that provides precise irrigation, N-Drip produces higher yields while saving water, without adding energy or needing water filtration.
