Here are the Illinois, Indiana and Iowa estimates released Jan. 12 by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Illinois
The Prairie State set a soybean yield average record of 64 bushels per acre, up four bushels from 2020. The previous record of 63.5 bushels per acre was set in 2018. Planted area of 10.51 million acres was up 3% from 2020. Production is estimated at 672.6 million bushels, 9% above 2020.
Illinois’ statewide corn average was 202 bushels per acre, 11 bushels higher than 2020 and eight below the 2018 record. Corn for grain was harvested on 10.85 million acres, 2% lower than last year. Production is estimated at 2.192 billion bushels, up 3% from last year.
Indiana
For the second consecutive year, Indiana set a record for the average soybean yield, hitting 59.5 bushels per acre after last year’s top mark of 59. Harvested acreage was 5.64 million, down 90,000 from 2020, and production totaled 335.58 million bushels, down 1% from last year.
Indiana’s corn yield averaged a record 195 bushels per acre, eight bushels above 2020. The previous record of 189 bushels per acre was set in 2018.
Indiana corn production in 2021 totaled 1.03 billion bushels, 5% above 2020. Corn acreage harvested for grain totaled 5.27 million, up slightly from 2020.
Iowa
The soybean crop averaged a record 62 bushels per acre in 2021, eight above the 2020 average and two higher than the previous high-water mark set in 2016.
Soybean production was estimated at 621.86 million bushels in 2021. This was a 23% from last year’s 506 million bushels. The harvested acreage of 10.03 million was up 660,000 acres from 2020.
Iowa’s corn set a new record average yield of 205 bushels per acre, surpassing the previous record of 203 set in 2016. The average was 177 bushels per acre in 2020.
Area harvested for grain was estimated at 12.45 million acres, 450,000 acres below 2020. Current year production of 2.552 billion bushels was up 12% from the previous year’s 2.283 billion bushels.
United States
U.S. soybean production in 2021 totaled a record 4.44 billion bushels, up 5% from 2020. The average yield was estimated at 51.4 bushels per acre, 0.4 bushel above 2020.
Planted area for the nation, at 87.2 million acres, was up 5% from the 2020 planted acreage. Soybean growers harvested 86.3 million acres, up 5% from 2020.
Record soybean high yields also occurred in Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin.
U.S. corn for grain production was estimated at 15.1 billion bushels, up 7% from the 2020 estimate. The average yield was projected at a record-high 177 bushels per acre, 5.6 bushels above the 2020 yield of 171.4 bushels per acre.
Estimated yields in 2021 were up from the previous year across most of the Eastern Corn Belt, Northeast and most of the Southeast. Record yields were also estimated in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Washington and Wisconsin.
Corn planted area, at 93.4 million acres, was up 3% from the 2020 estimate. Area harvested for grain was estimated at 85.4 million acres, 4% higher than the 2020 estimate.
Survey Methodology
The estimates in this report are based primarily on surveys conducted the first two weeks of December. The December Agricultural Survey is a probability survey that includes a sample of approximately 77,100 farm operators selected from a list of producers that ensures all operations in the United States have a chance to be selected.
Data from operators was collected by mail, internet, or telephone to obtain information on crop acreage, yield and production for the 2021 crop year.
